Binance Labs Rebrands as YZi Labs, Signals Strategic Shift Toward AI and Biotechnology

**Hong Kong, January 27, 2025** — Binance Labs, the venture capital and incubation arm of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, today announced it is rebranding to YZi Labs, marking a deliberate departure from its parent company's identity and a broadened investment mandate that now encompasses artificial intelligence and biotechnology alongside its established Web3 portfolio.

The name change is more than cosmetic. YZi Labs will operate as an independent entity, shedding the Binance brand to signal that its ambitions extend well beyond the crypto ecosystem that gave it life. The firm, which has backed over 250 projects and deployed capital across more than 25 countries since its founding in 2018, is positioning itself to compete directly with generalist deep-tech investors rather than remaining confined to the blockchain sector. The "YZi" designation pays tribute to Changpeng Zhao, the exchange's founder, whose initials anchor the new identity even as the firm charts its own course.

The pivot reflects a broader reckoning playing out across crypto venture capital. As blockchain infrastructure matures and token-based returns compress, funds that built their reputations on early DeFi and Layer 1 bets are hunting for the next asymmetric opportunity. YZi Labs is making a clear bet that convergence — specifically, the intersection of decentralized systems with AI compute and biological data — represents that opportunity. The firm has indicated it will pursue investments in AI agents, decentralized physical infrastructure, and longevity science, categories where cryptographic primitives and biological research increasingly share common ground around data ownership, incentive design, and distributed computation.

Ella Zhang, who leads the organization, framed the rebrand as a natural evolution rather than a reinvention. The firm's core thesis — backing founders building at the frontier of what distributed systems make possible — remains intact. What changes is the surface area. By decoupling from the Binance name, YZi Labs gains room to lead rounds in companies that might otherwise hesitate to take capital carrying exchange-affiliated strings, and to recruit limited partners and co-investors who have historically kept crypto-native funds at arm's length. Whether the rebrand translates into meaningful deal flow in AI and biotech, sectors with entrenched incumbents and long development cycles, will be the real test of the strategy.
