Vitalik Buterin has published a detailed proposal for "Beam Chain," a redesigned consensus layer for Ethereum that would introduce 4-second slot times, single-slot finality, and native zero-knowledge proof verification. The proposal, shared on ethresear.ch, outlines a multi-year roadmap that would eventually replace the current Beacon Chain.

Key innovations include a new BFT consensus mechanism that achieves finality within a single slot (compared to the current 12-minute epoch finality), ZK-SNARKs for validator state transitions, and a simplified staking mechanism that lowers the minimum stake to 1 ETH.

The proposal has generated significant discussion within the Ethereum research community. Supporters argue it would make Ethereum competitive with faster L1s while maintaining decentralization. Critics worry about the complexity of such a fundamental change and the timeline involved.

"Beam Chain is the vision for Ethereum's endgame consensus," Buterin wrote. "It's ambitious, but every component has been researched and prototyped. The question is sequencing and execution."
